Blackbird was designed and developed by 40A, whose mission is to Enhance Communities Through Innovation. Since Blackbird launched we have seen browsers announced and launched for a variety of communities (for example, branded browsers for Latino media, browsers for music fans, and branded browsers for women, etc.). The Browser is the primary way people access the Internet. By creating a easier way to get and manage information through the browser, a better user experience is created. While speed and performance are certainly important -- the primary capability of the browser is to improve access to information through closer tie-ins to web applications, such as search. Tailoring a browsers for communities or allowing individuals to hyper-customize their own browsers is a natural evolution for the browser. Blackbird is 40A's first browser.
Blackbird is not a small idea. It's a big idea -- can the Internet experience be made richer and better for the African American community. For example, can we drive more traffic to African American websites through use of the Blackbird browser, thus reversing a natural trend caused by the use of search engines. You may say, what natural trend caused by the use of search engines? Over the past 5 years search has become the dominate way people find content and this is the reason traffic to individual sites and small web portals is down considerably -- frankly, websites dedicated to African American content are being marginalized because information from these sites rarely comes up in the first page of search results. For example, if you search Michele Obama you may find a story link from CNN on the first page result BUT you will not find a story from Essence.com. Helping to promote and feature African American content is one of the main things Blackbird does. Primarily we believe that the Blackbird application can make it easier to find African American related content on the Internet and to interact with other members of the African American community online by sharing stories, news, comments and videos via Blackbird.
